UK Riots Cost Retailers £141 Million in Four Days
Kelkoo predicted the cost of recent riots cost UK retailers £141 million in the first four days. The estimated costs include:
- £80 million lost due to disruption of trading hours
- £17.4 million of stock lost due to looting and arson
- £43.5 million of damage to property and premises
Some costs will be covered by insurance and compensation schemes, but businesses have to wait for payments. Many insurers are working quickly to settle claims, but the process can be delayed when premises have been left in a dangerous condition or treated as a crime scene by police. Unfortunately many businesses are not expected to survive the aftermath of the riots.
Shops often rely on shutters to protect their premises, but as the Sky News report shows, they offer little protection from large scale organised looting.
Security window film, edge retention and window defence systems preserve building integrity even when the glass has been broken - preventing intruders, reducing damage and eliminating glass contamination to protect stock and get businesses trading again quickly.
